Apart from dubious would-be artists, the regency period also had a superstar: George Gordon Lord Byron, the most popular poet of his time. He was a genuine pop star, breaking the hearts of many a young lass (and lad). He also wrote one of my favourite political poems, about Lord Castlereagh, the minister in charge of the forces who had crushed a peaceful workers’ protest in Manchester in 1819, the ‘Peterloo Massacre’. Castlereagh later committed suicide, and Byron honoured his memory thus:
